Monuments and museums in Tolox

Although the town is best known for its Fuente Amargosa Health Spa, there are also numerous Tolox monuments and museums that visitors find interesting.

Murallas del Castillo or Castle Walls - The original castle was built by the Phoenicians but was further fortified by succeeding settlers like the Romans, Visigoths, and the Moors. It was even made one of the primary strongholds of Omar Ben Hafsun, a popular rebel leader who fought against the Cordoba Caliphate. Today, only a segment of the castle walls remains standing.

El Museo de Artes Populares or the Folk Arts Museum - Featuring a 19th century setting, this museum holds dining rooms, a kitchen, and a bedroom, complete with tools and other accessories that were popular during those times.

Ermita de San Roque or Monastery of San Roque - This building was built in the 20th century in honor of the town’s patron saint, San Roque. Consistent with the dominant color in the village, the monastery features a white-washed facade. It is perched on a scenic spot that features fantastic views of the La Sierra de las Nieves and El Valle del Rio Grande.

Iglesia San Miguel Arcangel or the Church of Saint Michael Archangel - Built in 1505, this church was once the place where Christians sought refuge during the Moorish uprising. It underwent a major reconstruction in 1577 after a big fire broke out and destroyed a large part of the altar walls.

Plaza Alta - This is the largest square in town and is strategically located to provide excellent views of some of the most artistic white-washed buildings in Tolox, including the Casa del Hidalgo Fernandez Villamor.

Ermita de la Virgen de las Nieves - This Tolox monument is actually located some 5 km from the town proper. It is a structure built entirely from stone and blends perfectly with the backdrop of pine and limestones.

Like all pueblo blancos, the town of Tolox itself, with its steep narrow streets and white-washed architectures, is already one big monument or museum. Its enchanting facade has been enough to draw visitors - both new and old - every year.
