Torrijos Monuments
This monument dates from the nineteenth century, it is dedicated to General Torrijos and his 48 companions, all of them shot on the beach of San Andrés de Málaga on December 11, 1831 after an attempt of revolt against the absolutism of Fernando VII. Torrijos was a strong defender of freedom and the Constitution, his attempt to transfer to the absolutist regime opened the doors to the liberal revolution in Spain.
It is a very important urban civil monument and characteristic of the Malaga of the last century.
It is located in the center of the famous and emblematic Plaza de la Merced stands an obelisk and its pedestal which is composed of a crypt, where the remains of General Torrijos rest. Adorn the obelisk crowns of Laurel, one for each of the victims of that trajico event.
