Gibralfaro Castle

Gibralfaro Castle crowns the hill of the same name, above the Alcazaba and the centre of Málaga. In the 14th century, the Nasrid king Yusuf I of Granada rebuilt and enlarged an earlier fortress here to protect the Alcazaba and house his troops, and his son Muhammad V completed the work. According to tradition, there was once a Phoenician lighthouse on the site, hence its name, Yabal-Faruh, "lighthouse hill".

History

The castle was linked to the Alcazaba by La Coracha, a walled passage that can still be seen on the hillside. In 1487 it held out for months against the siege of the Catholic Monarchs, which ended with the conquest of Málaga.

What to see and how to get there

You can walk along its walls and towers, with some of the best views of Málaga: the port, La Malagueta bullring and the whole bay. Inside, a visitor centre in the old powder store explains military life in the castle. You can walk up from the centre along the Paseo de Don Juan Temboury, an uphill path of about 20 to 30 minutes, or take a city bus. A combined ticket includes the Alcazaba.
