La Farola is the lighthouse of Málaga's port and one of the symbols of the city. It was built between 1813 and 1817 to a design by the engineer Joaquín María Pery y Guzmán, and it is one of only two lighthouses in Spain with a feminine name: locals have always called it "la Farola".
For two centuries it has guided ships into the port. It has been damaged and rebuilt over the years, but it keeps its silhouette, one of the most recognisable images of Málaga, and it is still in use, now automatically: the last lighthouse keeper left in 1993.
La Farola gives its name to the promenade linking Muelle Uno, the port's area of shops and restaurants, with La Malagueta beach. It is a lovely seaside walk, especially at sunset, with views of the port and Gibralfaro hill. Muelle Uno is also home to the Centre Pompidou.
