San Miguel Cemetery, in the Capuchinos district, is Málaga's historic cemetery. It opened on 1 July 1810, while the city was occupied by Napoleon's troops, under rules that since the late 18th century had banned burials inside churches, and after the yellow fever epidemic of 1804. For more than a century it was the city's main cemetery.
Its 250 or so family vaults, sculptures and mausoleums, many belonging to great middle-class families of Málaga such as the Larios, Heredia and Huelin, make up one of the most interesting 19th-century cemeteries in Andalusia, and it is a listed heritage site. Politicians, artists and notable figures from the city's history rest along its tree-lined paths.
Today it is above all a heritage site and has been restored for visitors. Guided tours explain its history and its most notable monuments; check the dates and opening times before you go.
