At the start of Calle Larios, facing the Alameda Principal, stands the monument to Manuel Domingo Larios y Larios, second Marquis of Larios. It is the work of the Valencian sculptor Mariano Benlliure and was unveiled in 1899 as the city's tribute to the man behind the street that bears his name.
In the late 19th century, the Marquis of Larios promoted the opening of a grand street linking the Alameda, by the port, with Plaza de la Constitución, then the heart of city life. Opened in 1891, with uniform façades and rounded corners designed by the architect Eduardo Strachan, Calle Larios is today Málaga's main shopping and pedestrian street, and the setting for its August fair and its Christmas lights.
The statue of the marquis tops a tall pedestal with allegorical figures of Charity, a mother with her child, and Labour, recalling his social work. From here you can walk along Calle Larios to Plaza de la Constitución or, in the other direction, reach the Parque de Málaga and the port in a few minutes.
